What are Martial Arts?
When the term "martial arts" is used, an image that comes to mind may be inspired by the popularity of the Eastern forms made famous by Bruce Lee. The fighting arts of Eastern Asia such as Karate, Kung Fu, and Judo are familiar to many. However, many styles of fighting arts have evolved over the years and “martial arts” is a much more all-encompassing term.
Martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat, all with a very similar objective - to defend oneself or others from physical threat. In addition, some martial arts are linked to beliefs, while others follow a particular code of honor. Martial arts are considered as both an art and a science. While each style has unique facets that make it different from other martial arts, a common characteristic is the systematization of fighting techniques. Methods of training vary and may include sparring (simulated combat) or formal sets or routines of techniques known as forms or kata.
In addition, there are also several different fighting arts that are widely practiced as a sport that fall under the name of martial arts.
